Carlos Ortiz, co-owner of the Cazcarra beauty studio in Barcelona, wears many hats: film technician, camera operator, and editor. His diverse skill set allows him to handle various aspects of the studio’s productions. The studio is part of the Cazcarra Image Group – a renowned makeup and hairdressing training school with its own cosmetics brand. “As the first established beauty school in Spain, we produce many videos about cosmetics and makeup techniques,” Ortiz explains.

To mark the end of the school’s final term, Ortiz was tasked with capturing the graduates’ fashion gala, KRONÖS. This unique event allowed students to showcase their creative concepts in front of a live audience. Unlike most school events held on-site, this gala was spectacularly staged on a custom-built runway at Barcelona’s SOM Multiespai shopping center. The event hosted over 300 guests in an outdoor enclave and was also streamed live on the school’s YouTube channel, garnering hundreds of online views.

To ensure all angles from the runway were captured, Ortiz employed multiple Sony cameras, including the A7III and A6000. He also rigged the A7IV and FX6 models with Atomos Ninja monitor-recorders. The Ninja’s high-definition touchscreen enabled Ortiz to quickly and efficiently review footage, ensuring no key moments from the gala were missed. “Being able to see my footage properly in all environments, without relying on the camera’s monitor, has been a game-changer,” he enthuses.

Models adorned in elaborate costumes, vibrant body paint, and special effects makeup graced the catwalk, accompanied by live musical performances. To accurately capture the vivid colors and intricate details, Ortiz utilized the monitor’s built-in tools such as False Color and Focus Peaking to enhance image quality. “It’s crucial for me to capture the makeup’s colours accurately, and the Ninja’s user-friendly tools make my work so much easier.”

As someone who regularly documents events, Ortiz values the Ninja’s versatility. “The ability to record LOG externally, while simultaneously sending a LUT feed of the same footage live is incredibly beneficial,” he explains. This feature has proven indispensable, ensuring that the live footage retains high-quality visual consistency. “The tools have been a lifesaver when shooting live events such as the gala,” Ortiz adds.

Back at the studio, Ortiz relies on the Ninja to deliver essential content, such as fashion and cosmetic product shoots for the school. “While I enjoy the beauty of shooting outdoors with the Ninja, I can depend on the monitor to provide me with clear, high-quality footage at the end of a working day at the studio.”
