Sebastian Lang, a German filmmaker and drone pilot based in Spain, specializes in capturing dynamic action, wildlife, and adventure footage in a variety of outdoor environments.

At the start of the year, Lang received an invitation from his friend, photographer and location manager Lucas Tozzi, to collaborate on a music video featuring Miguel Carrasco, the runner-up of the 2023 season of ‘The Voice’ in Spain. Keen to seize the opportunity, Sebastian joined the team as a camera operator, gaffer, and first assistant camera.

The video was shot on a picturesque farm near Granada in Andalucía, taking advantage of the farm’s rustic indoor areas and outdoor barn. The production team deployed tripods, gimbals, and sliders to capture striking shots of Miguel and the dancers. They relied on Atomos Ninja monitor-recorders and the Sumo 19-inch monitor, connected via HDMI transmitters, to provide a clear view of the footage.

Lang describes setting up the generously-sized Sumo to establish a video village for the crew, making the most of the available space on set. “Given the size of our crew, I wanted to create a dedicated space for them to comfortably view the footage without having to crowd around the camera,” he explains. “I wanted to create a video village to keep the set open for the dancers and allow Miguel to move freely while singing. Positioning the Sumo outside the set provided us with the necessary freedom of movement, and its large screen made it easy for everyone to see everything clearly.”

“The Sumo provided us with freedom of movement, and its large screen made it easy for everyone to see everything clearly.”

The Sumo features a wide range of professional monitoring tools that enabled Lang to swiftly review footage and make adjustments with ease. “False color was incredibly helpful for managing exposure, and the LUT feature provided us with a preview of the final image,” he explains. “Using V-mounts to power the monitor proved useful for outdoor shoots where access to power was limited.”

As a longtime user, Lang explains why Atomos is his preferred choice for simplifying his workflow. “Whether I’m shooting on land or underwater, Atomos equipment covers all my needs. The larger displays and advanced tools, along with the ability to record in RAW, significantly ease my workflow,” he notes. “These features are invaluable and have greatly enhanced my ability to capture high-quality footage.”
